3D scanner?

Post by Eric »

I see bunch or 3D scanners hitting the market lately. Anyone have any experience with one of them?

A while back I did the XBox Kinect hacked version with pretty great results but it is definitely not user friendly :)

FYI currently the Kinect is working great with the program Skanect. Loving it.

I've worked with the Kinect setup a bit myself. However if 3d scanners are gonna be a real thing, we need to see them hit a much lower price point. Most that I've seen are comparable pricing to actually buying a small 3d printer :P However 3d printers have hit a much lower price point too. But to answer the question, other than the Kinect, I havent messed with much of anything, unless you count the Autodesk 123D capture program that allows you to take pictures with a smart phone or tablet and it uses an online service to stitch them together and make a 3d model out of them. I've played with that quite a bit with varying degrees of success.

I think the photo-stitching will be the way forward. No special hardware and it does work incredibly well. Time will tell though.

Couldnt agree more. Why do something with expensive hardware if it can be done with a common camera and software.
